The tales of a 20-something, post-grad (going on 4 yrs) now a working stiff in the rat race putting her BBA degree to work... kinda. Mood: Other whereabouts: myspace | flickr
This site you're reading now (thanks!) is primarily for posting interesting clips, music & photos that I've found while browsing the Internets. But I am a music fan, to the point where I've began a blog featuring independent music artists, especially in the Cincinnati, OH area. I've featured artists from Atlanta & Toronto, Canada as well.
An Alaskan lawyer who busted his mouth while riding a mechanical bull at a Downtown bar is suing the bar for at least $25,000 because it didn't make him sign a waiver that would have explained he could get hurt by riding a machine designed to throw a human being from it.
Twinkie diet helps nutrition professor lose 27 pounds
(CNN) -- Twinkies. Nutty bars. Powdered donuts.
For 10 weeks, Mark Haub, a professor of human nutrition at Kansas State University, ate one of these sugary cakelets every three hours, instead of meals. To add variety in his steady stream of Hostess and Little Debbie snacks, Haub munched on Doritos chips, sugary cereals and Oreos, too.
His premise: That in weight loss, pure calorie counting is what matters most -- not the nutritional value of the food.
The premise held up: On his "convenience store diet," he shed 27 pounds in two months.
When one door closes, another opens; but we often look so long and so regretfully upon the closed door that we do not see the one which has opened for us.
Another quick piece I put together recently. There are street pianos temporarily installed at various locations in Cincinnati. This clip features the piano at the Public Library.
Sidenote: after adding the PicPosterous app to my iPod touch & finally taking time to create an album of some screenshots, I didn't realize I posted a few of them over the weekend...oops! So it does post instantly.
And now for today's quote:
“Don't wait until everything is just right. It will never be perfect. There will always be challenges, obstacles and less than perfect conditions. So what. Get started now. With each step you take, you will grow stronger and stronger, more and more skilled, more and more self-confident and more and more successful.” - Mark Victor Hansen
If you're into public relations & new media and don't have time to search all the daily headlines, I'd recommend you subscribe to the #commentznewsletter, published Monday-Friday by pr consultant Sarah Evans, you'll find valuable information and a nice quote or two :)
My latest editing project - a video promoting storytimes for The Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County. Hours of reviewing really cute footage into iMovie and simple layering & polishing in Adobe Premiere Pro resulting in this 58 second clip. Enjoy!
After posting my comments about Erykah Badu's latest video it was time to post some new music.I'm a fan of Erykah's music, but I didn't understand the video at first.
Anywho, here's one of my favorite songs of the moment, Un-thinkable by Alicia Keys.
I'm a newbie to video editing. I've taken a few classes on the basics, and I've been in trial-and-error mode lately with Adobe Premiere. Thank goodness for tutorials!
When I watch t.v. or the occasional movie, I'm observing transitions, camera angles, graphics, the timing of music, all sorts of elements. Editing has altered the way I watch video.
The title "Visual Goodies" is my way of sharing clips that I find, well, interesting.
Here's Rihanna's latest music video, Rude Boy. This video is so heavy with colors, unique outfits, and graphics, that it's almost too much to watch! Some of the patterns in the video gives me a M.I.A. vibe. See what I mean. I also wondered after watching this for the first time if someone could have a seizure from all the layers of colors flashing. Hmmm.
Bonus! Found some behind-the-scenes footage, too! Loving the timing of the still shots/zoom-ins & zoom-outs in the intro (around 0:34-0:45). I need to practice that. :)
Be courteous to all, but intimate with few, and let those few be well tried before you give them your confidence. True friendship is a plant of slow growth, and must undergo and withstand the shocks of adversity before it is entitled to the appellation. -George Washington (1732 - 1799) Source
I woke up at 3am Monday morning with a migraine, took some p.m. medication and went back to bed hoping that I would wake up on time 4 hours later.
Thanks to my trusty alarm, I did wake up on time with the same migraine unfortunately. I thought about staying home, but realized I had some time-sensitive projects to complete. So I dragged myself into work for a few hours. I talked to my mom before I left and she said this:
You'll have many jobs, but you only get one life.
So after completing those seemingly critical tasks, I went right back home, took another dose of the p.m. medication and slept most of the afternoon.
Lesson learned: I need to take better care of myself.
I’ll admit, it’s relatively easy for me to promote others & their efforts. When it comes to promoting myself & tooting my own horn, the task isn’t so effortless. I wouldn’t consider myself a PR pro, more like a pro-in-training or a newbie. So, here's my official bid for Help a PR pro Out day (Happo) (details here: http://helpaprproout.com/?p=189).
I’m looking a pr position that will allow me to nurture my creativity in a challenging & supportive environment. The following is a short list of my background & recent experience:
2004 graduate of the University of Cincinnati’s College of Business (Major: Marketing; Minor: Entrepreneurship/Family Business)
I’ve held down a few part-time gigs, including a work-study job with the UC Libraries during my four years of study. (2000-2004).I have a soft spot for non-profits, having working with them in some form for the past ten years.
One significant experience that exposed me to the world of public relations was my internship experience at a sports & entertainment pr firm. During my tenure there I learned how to use Bacon’s (now Cision); participated in guerilla marketing (street team) promotions for clients such as Cincinnati Bell, the Marvin Lewis Community Fund, Cincinnati Enquirer, etc.; and I assisted at the media center for the Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathon
I recently completed an online course via Media Bistro on public relations basics, including assignments on how to create tactical plans, biographies, pitch letters, and news releases.
Currently learning how to use Adobe Premiere Pro CS4. I’ve recently edited a intergenerational book discussion series using the software:
I’ve also created a teaser in iMovie to promote the series:
If anyone is interested in connecting, here’s how you can reach me:
I'm not heavy on politics, but I did manage to sit down and watch part of President Obama's State of the Union Address last night. Well, after a quick Chipotle run. Don't judge me. I like the idea of giving small businesses a break for raising wages & hiring additional talent.
Anywho, I came across this video of Chris Matthews post-SOTU commentary on MediaBistro.com:
Wow.
Later on, he clarifies his "I forgot he was black tonight" statement:
A recent study from the University of Wisconsin at La Crosse looked at the relationship between clothing and physical activity while at work. Researchers studied 53 people in a variety of professions and tracked both their daily activity (measured by pedometers) and how casually or professionally dressed they were.
Results showed that people took an average of 491 more steps each day if they wore casual clothing to work. That means that just by dressing comfortably, study subjects increased their daily calorie burns by eight percent

Take advantage of your company's casual Friday or business-casual dress code. The easiest way to increase comfort, even in a polished-professional environment, is to wear practical shoes.Dress for comfort and you’ll be more likely to walk to a co-worker's desk, take the stairs…even walk the dog when you get home (rather than just letting him out in the backyard).
No casual days at work? Have your own casual evenings and weekends. Or better yet, leave a copy of this study on your boss's desk.
It's only fair to acknowledge the celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day with his famous "I Have a Dream" speech:
Here's a video I edited for the annual celebration at my hometown library. Kids speak about what they learned about the holiday & what it means to tthem:
A self-proclaimed working stiff surviving out in the world hoping to work in entertainment one day. I'm a music and pop culture junkie that enjoys crafts, watching sitcom reruns, and hanging with friends & making them laugh. Future entrepreneur looking to turn dreams into a reality.
